Volunteer & Engagement Policy

Volunteers support Cry for Justice Nigeria by contributing time, skills, and professional expertise in line with our operational, confidentiality, and safeguarding standards. Volunteer engagement does not constitute employment and remains subject to review, policy compliance, and institutional oversight.

Purpose

Cry for Justice Nigeria welcomes individuals who wish to contribute their time, skills, and professional expertise in support of our public-interest mission.

This policy outlines the principles, expectations, and safeguards governing volunteer engagement to ensure integrity, safety, and institutional accountability

Scope of Volunteer Engagement

Volunteers may assist in areas including:
• Research support
• Legal and document review assistance
• Administrative coordination
• Civic education initiatives
• Technical or digital support
• Translation and communications

Volunteer roles are defined in writing and assigned based on operational need.

Participation does not create an employment relationship.

Eligibility & Selection

Volunteer engagement is:
• Subject to review and approval
• Based on skills, suitability, and availability
• Conducted in line with operational and safeguarding considerations

Cry for Justice Nigeria reserves the right to decline or discontinue volunteer engagement at its discretion.

Code of Conduct

Volunteers are expected to:
• Uphold the principles of fairness, accuracy, and respect for the rule of law
• Maintain confidentiality regarding unpublished materials
• Avoid conflicts of interest
• Act in a manner consistent with institutional values
• Refrain from unauthorised public representation of Cry for Justice Nigeria

Volunteers must not:
• Publish or distribute internal materials
• Speak on behalf of the organisation without written authorisation
• Access or retain documents beyond assigned tasks

Confidentiality & Data Protection

Volunteers may encounter sensitive information, including:
• Court documents
• Personal data
• Unpublished investigations
• Source materials

All such materials must be treated as confidential unless publicly released.

Volunteers agree not to disclose, reproduce, or retain confidential information beyond the scope of their engagement.

Safeguarding & Professional Boundaries

Cry for Justice Nigeria is committed to maintaining:
• A safe working environment
• Professional boundaries
• Respectful engagement
• Non-discriminatory practices

Any concerns relating to misconduct, harassment, or safeguarding issues should be reported through designated channels.

Independence & Non-Partisanshipv

Volunteers must respect the platform’s non-partisan status.
Engagement with Cry for Justice Nigeria must not be used to:
• Promote political interests
• Influence editorial decisions
• Advance private disputes
Editorial authority remains solely with the designated editorial leadership.

Intellectual Property

Work produced by volunteers in the course of engagement may be:
• Edited
• Published
• Archived
• Adapted
Final editorial control rests with Cry for Justice Nigeria.

Liability & Risk

Volunteer participation is undertaken at the individual’s discretion.
Cry for Justice Nigeria does not assume liability for:
• Personal decisions made outside assigned tasks
• Public commentary made independently by volunteers
• Actions taken without authorisation

Termination of Engagement

Volunteer engagement may be discontinued:
• At the volunteer’s request
• Due to operational restructuring
• For breach of policy or misconduct
• Where engagement no longer aligns with institutional needs
Termination does not require public explanation.

Amendments

This policy may be updated periodically to reflect operational, legal, or safeguarding developments.

Continued volunteer engagement implies acceptance of the updated policy.
